Materials
To make a 90"-diameter tablecloth (including fringe):
- James Thompson 60"-wide Sultana Natural Burlap: 1 3/4 yards
- Expo International trim: 6 yards each of Sage Bullion Fringe and Gimp Trim
- Matching sewing thread
- Fabric marking pen
- Yardstick or tape measure
- Scissors
- Iron and pressing surface
- Sewing machine
Instructions
- Cut the burlap to 60" long. Fold in half crosswise and lengthwise to find the center and mark it with a pin. Using a yardstick or tape measure, place one end in the center and mark a circle with a 30" radius.
- Serge or zigzag stitch along the marked line to prevent raveling. Cut out the circle just beyond the stitching.
- Sew the bullion fringe around the edge of the tablecloth. Sew the gimp trim over the bound edge of the bullion fringe.
{Sidebar: Making Larger Circular Burlap Tablecloths}
- To make a larger burlap tablecloth, first determine the size of the cloth. Measure the diameter of the table and add the desired length of the tablecloth drop on each side; this is your finished size. Add 1" for a hem if you will not add trim, or subtract the length of the trim you're planning to use to determine the tablecloth cut dimensions. You will need burlap yardage equal to twice the length of the cut dimensions.
- To determine trim yardage, multiply the tablecloth diameter by 3.14. Divide the resulting number by 36.
- Cut the burlap yardage in half crosswise to make two equal panels. Set one panel aside. Cut the remaining panel in half lengthwise. Sew each half-panel to a long edge of the full panel. Press the seams open.
- Follow Steps 1 through 3 for the 90" tablecloth to cut a circle in the determined dimensions and add fringe. Or for a hemmed edge, turn the edge under 1/2" and topstitch in place.
